“Setsubun” is one of the traditional events in Japan.
Every year on February 3rd, events to throw beans are held all over Japan.
Why do Japanese people throw beans?
There are several reasons why Japanese throw beans.
The first reason is the thinking that the word “bean” is an abbreviation for “destroy the demon.” In Japanese, beans are pronounced as “mame“, which is similar to “to exterminate evil spirits”, so beans are considered to be happy.
The second reason is that it hurts the most when you throw it out of the five grains. The five grains are rice, barley, foxtail millet, millet, and beans. Among the five grains, it was considered as a means of fighting demons.
The third reason is that there is a Chinese medical book that says that beans eliminate demon poison and stop pain.
There are words to say when we throw beans. It is “Oniwa soto, Fukuwa uchi”. That means ”demons outside, fortune inside”.
“Oniwa soto” means to drive out demons that bring disaster.
The meaning of “Fukuwa uchi” is that since ancient times in Japan, there is a thinking called “sangu”,which grains are scattered to purify and the place will be cleansed because the grains have spiritual powers.
In Japan, there is a custom to enjoy “Setsubun” with family. There are also events where celebrities throw beans at famous shrines or temples.

日本の伝統行事の一つである節分。
毎年二月三日は日本各地で豆をまく行事が行われます。
なぜ日本人は豆ををまくのでしょうか？
断定はできませんが、豆を巻く理由はいくつかあります。
1つ目は、豆という言葉が「魔を滅する」の略であるという考え方。日本語で豆は「まめ」と発音し、「魔を滅する」と発音が似ていることから豆が縁起が良いものと考えられています。
2つ目は、五穀の中では一番投げつけると痛いから。五穀というのは、「米」「麦」「アワ」「きび」「豆」です。五穀の中では鬼に対抗できる手段として考えられていました。
3つ目は、中国の医学書で、豆は鬼毒を消して痛みを止めるという言葉があるためとのことです。
豆まきをするときには言うべき言葉があります。それは「鬼は外、福は内」です。
鬼は外の意味は、災いをもたらす鬼を外に追い出すこと。
福は内の意味は、日本には古来、散供（さんぐ）という、穀物をばらまいてお祓いやお浄めをする考え方があり、その穀物には霊力が宿っているため、巻いた場所は清められると考えられていたからです。
日本では家族で節分を楽しむ風習があります。有名な神社などでは有名人が豆まきをするイベントもあります。
