Teru teru bozu is called differently depending on the region, such as “Tere tere Bozu” or “Terere Bozu“. “Teru(照)” means “the sun shines”, so in some areas it is written in kanji as “Teru teru bozu(照る照る坊主)”.

I might think that Teru teru bozu is a tradition of Japan, but it is actually said to have originated from a Chinese custom.
It is believed that Teru teru bozu originated from the Chinese “Souseijo(掃晴娘)”. “Souseijo” is a paper doll that imitates a girl holding a broom. It is believed that a broom is used to sweep away rain clouds, and when it rains, people make paper dolls of “Souseijo” and hang them in their homes to pray for clear skies.

Why did Chinese “Souseijo” turn into Teru teru bozu?
It is believed that this originated from the fact that it was the role of Japanese monks to pray for the recovery of the weather. Japanese monks are called “bozu”.

2.首を輪ゴムでとめる
3.首に紐をつけ窓辺に吊るす
4.晴れたら顔を描く
てるてる坊主は晴れて願いが叶ったら顔が描かれていたそうなので、晴れる前に顔を描くのは本来の順番とは異なり、効果が薄れてしまうと言われていたそうです。
